Bialetti 8-Cup French Press
Scott Fairbairn

The Bialetti 8-Cup French Press is the ultimate in quick strong "coffee for dummies". You can't mess it up!To Use:1.) Remove the plunger;2.) drop a few spoonfuls of ground coffee into the glass beaker;3.) fill the beaker a few inches with boiling water;4.) stir;5.) replace the plunger and press it down slowly through the water until it reaches the bottom of the beaker;6.) pour and enjoy!WARNING: If you're not used to coffee with a high caffeine content, go easy with this at first. An ensuing caffeine headache is almost guaranteed any day following a high-caffeine intake day UNLESS you continue to take in high caffeine levels at or near the same time of day. To avoid caffeine headaches, be consistent with your daily caffeine intake OR, withdraw from caffeine gradually, reducing the amount over a number of days.Pros:fast, easy, affordable, convenient, rinse-and-store clean-upCons:A floating coffee granule or two may occasionally be found in the brew. For me, this isn't really a drawback and it only happens infrequently, particularly with fine-ground coffee.Bialetti coffee makers are consistently among the best of the affordable genre of manual home brewers. This one's no exception.Enjoy!Scott

easy to use and care for, once in a while a few grounds get past the filter- this may be because it is easily bent around the edges, so you have to watch out for that. I think this product is well worth the price.

unshipable
Jeannine Otchis

The only reason I gave it one star is so I could review this. The glass carafe arrived broken. Item was immediately returned. I am still waiting for the charge to be removed from my credit card...4weeks. Do not order it. The packaging for shipping is inadequate.

Fantastic french press!!
Stephanie S.

I bought this French Press a few weeks ago, partly because I can't resist anything small and cute :) Seriously though, I'd been using a larger one from a popular swedish furniture store for about a year. But I only made half a caraffe full, so this one seemed like a good idea. I make one cup of coffee at a time (I'm the only coffee drinker) and this makes a perfect amount for one large mug plus a little milk. It's not 3 servings, but generally one "cup" of coffee is understood to be 4 or 6 ounces, not an actual 8 ounce cup.I can feel the quality difference between this one and my $15 press from the aforementioned furniture store. Easy to clean, cute, and makes great coffee :) Perfect for me!

works beautifully
Huaising C. Ko

works beautifully, but it's a little less than enough coffee. it really only makes one serving, and i wish it were a little more generous. otherwise, it's perfect. easy to clean, lightweight, easy to use.

The product is of very good quality. It performs as it was designed. We enjoy the dark coffee it produces.

Makes a Great cup of coffee!
K. McLachlan

I purchased this for my son for a Christmas gift, He is extremely hard to please when it comes to a good cup of coffee and this makes one. He also loves how the Hario Coffee Dripper V60 makes one cup at a time! So, all in all a great addition to his Coffee Bar at his home. I chose the red over the white even though it cost a little more because I loved the vibrant color. I definitely would recommend this.

Awesome!
Kim Byrkett

This is an excellent coffee maker. It makes consistently smooth, delicious coffee and it is quick and easy to use.

mmm
Nora Chamberlin

this was the best coffee accessory i have ever purchased. there is so much more of an experience to making a cup of coffee this way rather than just pouring some water down the back of a plastic machine and pressing start. Its fun and much tastier, easy to clean, and well worth the money.

User Reviews

Does not fit 2011 model 4-cup La Cafetiere
NJML

Having broken the beaker of the 4-cup La Cafetiere I purchased from Amazon in spring 2011, I expected these replacement beakers to fit. No luck. The top section w/press mechanism was too large to fit in the beaker. I ended up buying a new 4-cup total unit from Amazon. And the replacement beakers fit the newer model. And ironically, the top section w/press mechanism from the 1-year ago unit fits the new total unit beaker part. So, bottom line, if you are looking for a replacement beaker from an older 4-cup unit, this item may not work for you. The 2011 unit I have had a black 'ball' on top the press component. The 2012 unit on Amazon has a silver 'ball'. Hope this helps.

It's good to have my coffee again, but this beaker is slightly smaller than the original and therefore slides out as you pour if not holding the top of the pot.

A direct replacement for West Bend electric French Press. Just what I needed. Good quality. Now I don't have to buy an entirely new french press

Great Carafe
Peter Bartzen

I have been using my Bodum and the carafes kept breaking in the dishwasher. I decided to try the BonJour Universal Carafe. It has been two months and no problems. They are a little cheaper than the Bodum replacement carafes and the also seem to be more durable.

great replacement
round raven

thank god for these replacement carafes. We would have to replace our french press over and over without them. Our French press is almost 16 years old and we use it every single day. Hurray for BonJour for making it possible to keep it for that long.Love, the glass breaker.

Strong glass!
Morgananny

This was ordered to replace the broken glass in my Le Cafetiere press, which came with a very thin carafe that broke the 2nd day I had it. This one has been going strong for several weeks now. It is much thicker than the original, and is very strong.

Too delicate
Y. C. Lin

This is my third replacement. The beaker is just too thin to break. After I broke the second one, I've got really annoyed and started looking for other frother. I even got a hand-held electric one. It didn't make the froth like the beaker and the pump do. In the end, I had no choice but bought another replacement, which was overpriced. It's either buy more replacement or spend a fortune on an espresso machine that comes with a steamer. I wish Pyrex could have made the beaker. I will keep looking for a better milk frother while I'm enjoying my cappuccino.

Carafe
K. reilly

These carafes are so thin that they break at the slightest tap. The company charges an outrageous $12 to replace 50 cents worth of glass.

Great frother enhances the look and taste of your coffee!
C. Van

I've been using these frothers for about 15 years and couldn't live without them. Better than steamed milk in your cappucino! The only downside is that they break easily, and so I have needed several replacements.

With plastic switch to a silicone-edge plunger. Update on durability.
Acorn

If your press has a metal plunger you'll need to buy their silicone-edged plunger when you change to the plastic beaker, otherwise the sides of the plastic unit will become scratched and cracked in a relatively short timeUpdate: We're on our third plastic beaker in 15 months. The first one cracked because we hadn't switched to a silicone-edge plunger(above). The second unit lasted longer but then cracked as well. After getting the third plastic one I talked with a Bodum and he said that I must be sure to wait 45 seconds after the water has boiled before pouring it into the beaker, and that the water must not touch the sides when pouring. BTW, he agreed to send me a free backup beaker.

Has held up for almost 2 years...
MamaOwl

I opted for the "shatterproof" model when I bought my first Bodum; not quite understanding at the time that their "polycarbonate" meant "plastic" -- so it wasn't as "elegant" as the French press coffee-makers I had seen around. But given the number of glass drip carafes we've gone through before I went to press coffee, I wasn't too disappointed. It's held up very well, especially considering that I grind my coffe myself and do it way too fine, so it takes extra *oomph* to get the press down! It is time for a replacement now, since my original has developed stress cracks radiating from the center bottom. It's not yet affecting it's function, but I'm afraid it's a matter of time... It's been through the dishwasher, though, countless times; and has probably hit the floor once or twice!

Shatterproof Beaker
Erica L. Johnson

Do not waste your money on this item! I purchased the beaker so that I would not have to replace glass ones, which I have broken while washing in the sink (once someone "poured" it out of the holder and broke it). By my 3rd glass replacement beaker, I decided to buy the plastic. It cracks laterally, all around the beaker. You can hear it splitting, and this occurs only in a few weeks. Plus they are more expensive. Rip off!! I'm simply going to have to be more careful with my glass beakers.

Keeps Coffee Fresh!
Barbara C

Keeps coffee nice and fresh, Totally air tight, filled it up with water to test and didn't leak one drop! Holds less than a pound though.

Does the trick
James Standish

I was skeptical at first, but have since been impressed with the improved freshness of my coffee. I also purchased an additional BeanSafe for my loose tea. My only criticism is that the latches feel a little cheap, and may not last.

Works great!
Pat Langton

This product does what it says it will do. Our coffee beans smell wonderful every time I open it. In fact, recently we had to stop grinding our beans for over a week when our coffee grinder broke. When we finally got our new grinder, our beans still smelled as fresh as they did the day I put them in. In addition, this container is extremely easy to both open and close. I would recommend it to anyone who is curious about whether it works.

User Opinions

Shatter proof is good.
kiljoy100

When I got the press, I thought the price was a little high for an all plastic French press. Then it occurred to me that I'd already broken 3 glass ones at $20+ each. This guy is more than worth the buy. It's also dishwasher safe to boot.As for the plunger; it's plastic mesh, and I thought I wouldn't like it. But it's much easier to clean than the layered metal screen in the press I had previously. And it makes a better seal so grounds do not migrate around. From a klutzy guy, I'd say it's more than worth the $$ to keep from breaking the glass carafes.UPDATE 09-15-11 De-rated to 3 stars. After 1 year of use (mostly on the weekends) the polycarbonate has developed multiple hairline cracks all over it. Maybe this was from putting it the dishwasher, but who knows? When you plunge it, hot coffee shoots out of the cracks all over the place. I ended up replacing it with another glass one. If I was going to spend the extra money for a shatterproof press, you'd think it would last longer than 1 year with occasional use. I loved this thing and now I'm pretty disappointed.

Works Great!
Douglas

First french press I've owned. Love it! Needed something that wouldn't break easily, so chose the shatterproof press. The beaker is a heavy clear plastic. Looks like glass from a distance, but very durable. The mesh filter for this product is a one-piece unit and does not disassemble into smaller parts, but works like a charm. No grounds in the coffee and easy to clean.

Best French press we've ever had!
Heather

My husband and I love this French press! We have owned several other brands of French presses over the years, but none have made the coffee taste this good or been so effective at keeping the coffee grounds out of your cup. It really is amazing! The press is significantly better than any I've ever seen because it really seals the grounds down at the bottom. I know that from now on I'll only buy Bodum French presses.

Great Little French Press
Connor Kenway

I got this because I wanted a french press at the office (they got a Keurig, no thank you). I have a classic Bodum which I love, but wanted to try a Grosche product anyway. This is a great little piece, very well made. I grew up working at the family business, which sold to machine shops, so I like to think I know a thing or two about manufacturing, haha. Nice polished stainless steel all around, no plastic at all. Even the handle is a piece of stainless steel with a thin layer of hard rubber over it. The filter comes apart really easily so you can clean everything better. Its a sharp, simple, solid piece, and I think it even looks nicer in person.UPDATE: I've used this press 10+ times since purchasing, and it has been nothing but wonderful. The only super-minor thing is that after washing, water must get in the handle, and the rubber sleeve over the handle slides around. After cleaning and drying it overnight, I applied some super glue, and its absolutely perfect now. Still would advise this product to anyone.

Good but very small
Foodie

I know the description of this indicates it's small. I was expecting this to be similar in size to a Bodum small press I was replacing. But this is even smaller than that one. It's not a big deal because I just add a little hot water to my coffee when it's done. I like that all the components are metal. The only plastic is on the inside on the lid. I'd prefer if that were metal, too. The filter does a good job, and the whole thing is small enough for the top rack of the dishwasher, no problem.UPDATE:After only having this a couple of months, the glass spout broke off. I'm not sure if it was bumped in the dishwasher or feel over at some point, but it was never dropped. I had my previous small Bodum press for about 12 years, so maybe that puts this in perspective. I will not get this one again because it was too fragile.UPDATE #:I want to add that I went to the Grosche site to order a replacement carafe (not available on Amazon) and a few other people had commented there that the glass seems very fragile. This is not worth the money. Also replacing the carafe is about $14-15. I'm going to buy another Bodum instead.

The metal base broke on the first day--otherwise, I loved this coffee press
bdgilfry@wildchildpublishing.com

The base of this unit broke right away. Let me explain. The base consists of three stainless steel legs that are spot welded together. One was a little crooked, so I tried straightening it with my fingers. With very little pressure, it broke off where it was welded.I was very disappointed, because this press makes amazing coffee. So, I returned this unit and bought the GROSCHE LISBON French press (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005MG4AF8/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00). Please see my review there, because these French presses make outstanding coffee. If the base of this unit hadn't broken, I would have given this unit 5 stars. Maybe I got a defective one. Anyway, the Grosche Lisbon worked out better for me, because it pops right into the microwave, so I don't have to boil water in advance.

watch out - the sizes are confusing!
David Kieras

I really like my Bodum coffee presses - I have two sizes, and was delighted to see I could replace the beaker separately. But watch out if you order a replacement beaker. My small one holds 3 of what I think are ordinary cups, so I ordered the 3 cup replacement beaker by mistake. Looks like my small one is actually an 8 cup unit, and my big one (which hold 5 of my cups) is a 12 cup unit. There is no info on the Bodum itself of how big it is, so if you don't remember, it takes some guesswork to figure out whether you have a "3", "8", or "12" cup Bodum.Study the measurements carefully and get the closest match. The oz's held are the easiest way to tell, but of course if the beaker is broken you have a problem.

The glass beaker does its job well, and stands up to the dishwasher great. What it doesn't tolerate is any kind of accidental "crash" by knocking it against a sink or faucet. Before you can blink an eye, it's broken. Anytime it is in your hands, BE CAREFUL!!

Coffee purists believe that a French Press delivers the most satisfying cup for a couple of reasons: The downward pressure captures the coffee's rich, concentrated flavorsThe coffee grounds remain in direct contact with the brewing water, ensuring none of the essential oils are wasted Still, a very common (and basic) pet peeve that even the most enthusiastic French Press-connoisseur voiced was its difficulty to clean. In typical OXO fashion, we devoted ourselves to correcting this issue with our very own French Press. Fun Fact: Food & Wine's senior recipe developer found she could use our Press to make a quick broth by steeping dried mushrooms in hot water and the pressing to pour out the liquid. Problems Identified Unequivocally the biggest complaint about a French Press is the cleanup. The nitty gritty is that rinsing alone will not extract every last bit of coffee grounds. Further, dumping large amounts of coffee grounds down the sink can cause clogs in your drain.Without a heat source, the temperature of coffee in a French Press declines faster than other methods of making coffee.Dosage with a French Press can be tricky – too much and the coffee is too strong, too little and it is too weak. The Process Our first attempt at a cleaning solution for coffee grounds had a center rod that caused hot water to bubble to the top – a non-gratifying (and potentially dangerous) solution. The development team explored a stainless steel housing to encase the glass carafe, primarily because it made the Press more table-friendly. What they discovered was that it actually kept the coffee warmer, longer.Coffee Connoisseurs recommend a 17:1 ratio (that means 17 grams of water to every 1 gram of coffee grounds). OXO's Solutions Our patent-pending silicone GroundsKeeper acts as a squeegee along the inside of the glass carafe, allowing you to swipe and dump coffee grounds into the garbage or Compost Bin in one easy step. A sturdy stainless steel housing and glass carafe ensure the optimal brewing temperature and keep coffee warmer, longer. Easy-to-read recommended measurement markings on the GroundsKeeper and carafe help deliver a delicious cup of coffee without all the guesswork. The OXO Story: In 1990, OXO staged a revolution (of sorts) by offering an easy-to-use, high-performing alternative to uncomfortable and ineffective kitchen gadgets. OXO's innovative take on the traditional Swivel Peeler, complete with its pudgy black handle, raised consumers' expectations of what could be expected from household products. Today OXO offers over 800 products, each developed with a close (some might say "obsessive") attention to detail. Our goal is to deliver products that maximize comfort AND performance, illustrating our mission to create innovative consumer products that make everyday living easier. Ever wonder what makes an OXO product an "OXO Product"? OXO employees believe there are two rules that should guide product development: First, every new product must deliver a significant improvement over the status quo. Second, the functionality should never be sacrificed to make the product more attractive – above all it should work well.

serious flaws
Julie Ann Schreiner

While the press makes good coffee, I don't recommend buying one unless you're willing to replace it often. It seems one part of another is always breaking. I bought it because of the grounds keeper. But it gets suctioned to the bottom of the beaker making it almost impossible to get out. I cracked the beaker trying to get it out. I finally figured out if you slide a butter knife down the side it helps to break the seal. The crack in the beaker was small so I was able to keep using the press. However, the plunger broke this morning. Things keep breaking on it and at the point it totally unusable. So basically the whole thing broke within a matter of months of purchasing it. I will be purchasing a new french press, but never ever this one again. Invest your money else where. That all being said I gave it two stars instead of one because it does make a good cup of coffee, it's just not worth the hassle.

Goundskeeper works great
Joseph Manley

I made a video of me using the groundskeeper and wanted to upload it but it was too big. Not going to fool with it, but if you want it, just comment on this review and I'll get an email from amazon. We'll go from there. But anyway good ol groundskeeper willie works great, gets everything really clean. Its definitely not "good idea bad product" but "good idea and you pulled it off whoever designed this must drink press"A few other points to make:1. The glass is nice and thick, thicker even than bodum presses, I think, and also has markings on it for making smaller amounts of coffee, which is nice2. The base of the press is also very thick (not the carafe but the housing), which gives it a "hot pad" like feature3. The "groundskeeper" is made of silicone, and so far this has not affected tasted at all (nor should it, I think)4. Very easy to clean, groundskeeper aside. The gasket comes off the plunger, the filter is all one piece and unscrews from the shaft.5. I mention this in the video, but the metal flange that attaches to the silicone disc to make the groundskeeper runs up along the inside of the carafe. It fits very flush and does not affect the seal.6. The screen is about as fine as bodum presses I've used, so I get the same amount of crud in the bottom of my cup.7. Take out the groundskeeper and it will function just like a normal press; i.e. it's not designed so that it will only work with the groundskeeper, which is great.Overall a very well-made product. Just what I've come to expect from OXO. I am happy with it, although I did get it resale for half price. Big thumbs up.

Excellent design and functionality!

If you are standing at the store as I was, looking at the design of this product and reaaallly hoping that it works as intended but are skeptical because the grounds keeper seems to stick as you lift it out of the carafe, STOP wondering and buy the derned thing. Oh OXO! How I love your products' ergonomic slipless grips, design solutions, and seemless integration of form and function! This is ultimately a regular french press but the primary funtion is overridden by the wonderful solution to the funky coffee sludge scraping problem inherent to all french presses - the grounds keeper. After enjoying your pot of coffee, you can remove the press and unsnap the grounds keeper from the rim of the carafe. You will not be able to automatically lift the keeper free so don't try to force it like you're opening a jar of pickles. It's vacuum sucked to the bottom. You need to break the seal. To do this, simply bend the grounds keeper arm over to the opposite carafe rim, hear the unsucking noise and now you can easily lift it out with the coffee sludge. The sludge slips easily into the trash can.Be aware that the carafe housing is made of metal. It does not insulate heat... For all that is holy, please only pick this press up by the handle when it is filled with boiling water and steeping coffee grounds! Thus far, this is the only design flaw but if you follow the #1 kitchen rule and avoid grasping metal implements that have been in contact with a heat source with your naked hand, it's an easy work around.

Very Disappointing!
Chris

This product sounded like a winner. For over 30 years I've used a French press and for over 20 years have used Le Creuset cookware. You can imagine that when I saw this product it seemed like a marriage made in the kitchen! Wrong! The coffee press is very disappointing. Poor design: lid is loose fitting, easily spills even when filled to correct level. Sadly I do not think it is worth the money and would NOT recommend it.

Works great just like the Bodum
izzy100

Bought this for my other half becasue it has NO PLASTIC PARTS -- we are always concerned about plastics leaching (especially into hot food/ liquids like coffee). Work just as well as our Bodum and not too many grains even though there is no secondary strainer for pouring. Make sure you pre-heat the vessel so your coffee stays hot (we just use hot tap water). And the color grading is very similar to the picture. He has been using it everyday.

Excellent French Press
Troy

I ordered this product about a week ago... I have used it every morning since I purchased the product. It's absolutely AMAZING!I was hesitant at first because as far as I am aware this is Le Creusets first attempt at a French Press. I normally use a Bodum, but since I own so many other Le Creuset pieces that are fabulous, I thought I would give this a try.The Coffee produced is equivalent to Bodum but the finishes on the Le Creuset are far better. For instance, the Screen that is used to filter the coffee when it's pressed down is more finely knit and seems to be of sturdier metal. The whole press is just built better.Made in Asia along with the rest of their stoneware products. They have been doing this for years. Nothing to be upset about like I have read on many reviews. The quality is still there, and let's face it, every company wants profit. However, Le Creuset has not compromised quality. Their Cast Iron is still produced in France.

Best deal for Bodum Chambord 12 cup French Press Coffee Maker, 51 oz, Chrome is trending. This best Bodum Chambord cup is currently on the market, you might buy it right now for just $67.00 and usually delivered in a single day.

Item Information

The Chambord is Bodum’s original coffee press design, which the company began to mass produce in 1982 after acquiring a small factory in Normandy where craftspeople made these presses by hand. Bodum takes great care to instill the same quality in craftsmanship, and the result, according to coffee purists, is a brewing machine that produces a taste and aroma superior to any electric coffeemaker. The secret is that the grounds are able to steep in boiling water for about 4 minutes before they are pressed with the plunger, producing a richer, full-bodied flavor. The glass carafe on this Chambord model holds a maximum of 48 ounces or 12 cups of brewed coffee or tea, making it a useful size for entertaining or for all-day-long drinkers. The chrome-plated brass frame and lid and stainless-steel plunger are durable and will hold up to years of brewing. For easy cleaning, the carafe and all its parts go right into the dishwasher. Replacement parts are available from the manufacturer. --Cristina Vaamonde From the Manufacturer When Bodum took over a small clarinet factory in Normandy in 1982, it was not because of the fine orchestra clarinets they were producing. In addition to musical instruments, the factory also produced the coffee of a relatively unknown brewer called "The Chambord." Bodum combined the skills of these Normandy craftspeople with modern production. The result was a unique culinary tool, affordable to the many who loved the taste of what we now know as French press coffee. Thanks to Bodum, and thanks to the increasing need for better coffee, the French press coffeemaker has become one of the most popular in the world. Yet the design has not strayed a bit from the original drawings, and Bodum still makes the Chambord with the same painstaking care and knowledge they gained from those Normandy craftspeople years ago. The ease of brewing and the delicious smell and taste of French-roasted dark coffee have remained unchanged. Awards and Accolades
In 2004 the Bodum Chambord coffee press received the American Culinary Institute's award for best French press coffeemaker. The American Culinary Institute judges food preparation products such as mixers, waffle makers, and electric teakettles. These products are judged on criteria important to consumers such as ease of use, safety, and the quality of the food produced. The institute also judges food preparation products used in restaurants and hotels, including institutional mixers, large-volume coffee machines, and food slicers. Instructions for Use
1. Place pot on a dry, flat, nonslip surface. Hold handle firmly, then pull the plunger straight up and out of the pot. 2. For each 1.25-deciliter/4-ounce cup, put 1 rounded tablespoon or 1 Bodum scoop of coarse-ground coffee into the pot.
Caution: Use only coarse-ground coffee. Fine grind can clog the filter and create high pressure. Place coffeemaker on a heatproof, nonslip surface. 3. Pour hot (not boiling) water into the pot. Leave a minimum of 2.5 centimeters/1 inch of space at the top. Stir the brew with a plastic spoon.
Caution: Metal spoons can scratch or chip the glass beaker and cause breakage. 4. Place the plunger unit on top of the pot. Turn lid to close off the pour spout opening. (Does not apply to the Brazil models.) Do not press down. Let the coffee brew for at least 4 minutes. 5. Hold the pot handle firmly, with the spout turned away from you, then using just the weight of your hand, apply slight pressure on top of the knob to lower the plunger straight down into the pot. Lowering the plunger slowly with minimal pressure produces best results. If the filter clogs or it becomes difficult to push down the plunger you should remove the plunger from the pot, stir the brew, and then slowly plunge again.
WARNING: Using excessive force can cause scalding liquid to shoot out of the pot. 6. Turn the lid to open the pour spout and then pour coffee. 7. Unscrew the filter assembly and clean the plunger unit after each use. All parts are dishwasher-safe. Safety Instructions
Not for stovetop use. Check glass beaker for scratches, cracks, or chips. Do not use a pot that is scratched, chipped, or cracked. Install a replacement beaker before using the pot again. Keep children away while using. Hot water is a hazard to small children! Do not allow children to use this coffeemaker. Scald Hazard
Excessive plunging force can cause scalding hot liquid to shoot out of pot. Do not plunge with force. Turn lid to close spout. Use only coarse-ground coffee. Company History
In 1944 Peter Bodum, the father of today's owner, Joergen Bodum, started Bodum in Copenhagen. Times were difficult at the end of World War II; there was hardly any trade and people were out of work. Peter Bodum managed to wholesale a very small variety of housewares products by Danish manufacturers. After the war Peter Bodum got an import license for kitchen and tabletop products; he traveled all over Europe and ended up importing kitchen and housewares to Denmark. As in the rest of Europe in those days, a lack of products in Denmark meant a market existed for almost anything to be sold. He specialized in glassware from Eastern Europe. In the '50s Peter Bodum started developing his own products. He collaborated with the Danish architect Kaas Klaeson for a range of coffeemakers. At the time, industrial-design-type kitchen products were very rare. The first Bodum product to hit the market in 1958 was the Santos coffeemaker--based on a vacuum coffee brewing system. It became an instant sensation not only in Denmark but in all of Europe. Bodum still produces the original Santos design to this very day. Bodum grew steadily during the '60s, but sadly, in 1967, at the age of only 57, Peter Bodum passed away. His wife managed the company until 1974, when she offered her 26-year-old son Joergen to join her in the management of the company. Joergen quickly brought on board Carsten Joergensen--then a teacher at the Danish School of Art in Copenhagen--and soon put him in charge of overall design for Bodum, including everything from products to corporate design, exhibitions, shops, buildings, catalogs, and advertising. It turned out to be a very long and fruitful collaboration. The two men began to fulfill Bodum's credo--"good design doesn't have to be expensive"--in lots of different ways. In 1974 the first fruit of Joergen and Carsten's collaboration was introduced: the French coffee press Bistro. It was also the first incorporation of the new Bodum design language--beautiful simplicity and excellent materials for everyday life. Many more variations of coffee presses followed. Since 1974, Bodum has produced over 50 million French presses, taken the leap from "coffee" to "kitchen," and developed and produced a large variety of beautiful household and tabletop designs. In 1979, when he took over the company, Joergen Bodum decided to move to Switzerland in order to be more centrally located in Europe. He chose the Lucerne area, where Bodum's head office has been located since the early '80s. In 1980 Bodum Switzerland and its design unit, Pi-Design, were founded. Then, in 1986, the opening of Bodum's first shop in London marked another milestone in the Bodum history. It was designed not only to be the perfect showcase for the large variety of Bodum products but to embody an even stronger presentation of Bodum as an international brand. Many more shops in many more cities all over the world followed: Paris, Copenhagen, Zurich, Lucerne, Tokyo, New York, Dallas, Okinawa, Auckland, and many more. To this day there are 52 Bodum stores worldwide. With more and more of its own stores in place, Bodum continued broadening its collection of beautifully designed everyday life products--from kitchen to home. Today Bodum offers its customers everything from the latest coffee- and tea-making products to tabletop, kitchen, storage, textiles, bathroom, and home office products. Some stores also have a café where Bodum's own selection of coffees and teas are served. The Bodum Group is, and always has been, a 100 percent family-owned business. Today the company operates in 14 different countries with over 700 employees worldwide. Bodum has holding companies in Denmark and Switzerland as well as 12 sales companies, 3 production companies, and a design company called Bodum Design Group, located in Switzerland.

A Classic European Staple

I remember the first time I saw one of these, it was Stowe VT, approx. 1984, and the savy worldy friend educated me that she had experimented with many methods of coffee making and this was her favorite. How right she was. I have been hooked ever since and have only replaced my Bodum once......due to divorce, not distruction. I recommend heating the water by using an electric kettle that sits on a seperate base(Target has Philips Electric Kettle HD4651). I agree with fellow reviewers on not using boiling water (I let the kettle sit a bit) and with swirling a bit before a slow plunge. To keep coffee warm while brewing in the Bodum, use a cozy (an insulated fabric cover) or a dish towel wrapped around, I let sit approx. 5 minutes. Lastly, always avoid soap/dishwashing liquid. If you just use hot water to rinse clean there is no need of soap. I learned this trick in Ireland. (They also never wash tea pots in suds) Coffee grinds are safe to go down the sink, my Dad said that the local plumber told him that it is good at exfoliating the pipes. Ask your own plumber to be sure. So clean up is as simple as just rinsing in hot water, no need for messy filters or grinds everywere. Not only in my own home, but in castles and bed and breakfasts all over Europe, the French Press is a staple way of serving coffee. ENJOY

great coffee, miserable glass
"owatha"

My Bodum presses have always made great coffee, but unfortunately, they don't ever last very long. I think Bodum must have something wrong with the process they are using to blow glass these days. The last three of these presses (yes, three) that I've had have all cracked from what must be expansion/contraction problems since the only thing that happened before I had coffee on my feet was adding hot water to the carafe. I've been very careful with all of them, so abuse is not the culprit. If it were not for this less than minor problem, I'd give it five stars - however, since the average cost of a cup of coffee increases with the number of presses that I have to buy, I'm giving it 2 stars.

buy the Frieling stainless steel instead
kabbalah

I've owned every different type of coffee maker possible over the years and the French press if used correctly is my favorite. I have had a few Bodum ones and they were the best UNTIL I found the Frieling stainless steel 35 Ounce French press. This is an improvement as significant as the automobile over the horse and buggy. The stainless steel keeps the coffee hot, and they are no more broken glass beakers. It is also a fabulous looking piece. For a few bucks more you'll be much happier. By the way there are 2 different size models. Go with the bigger one as they are very close in size.
