Reviews

Fits the Bodum perfectly

Fit perfectly into both my Bodum presses. One was a tired and cracked polycarbonate, the other broken glass. Remember that the measure "cup" in French presses equals 4 oz., what we call a demi-tasse or espresso cup. Therefore "3-cup" is 12 oz., perfect as a one-cup maker for American coffee.

Stated product dimensions are not fully accurate

Those considering buying the Bonjour 3-cup replacement carafe (or any) may want to carefully measure the dimensions of their French press frame and plunger first, and know that the dimensions stated for this model are not completely accurate. Dimensions, other than capacity in 4-ounce cups, aren't listed for replacement carafes from other manufacturers, so expect no help there.I somehow missed the inaccurate second sentence under Product Description when I ordered my unit on May 30, 2011 (I can only assume the statement was there at that time): "And [the carafe] measures 2 3/4" diam. X 5 1/4" tall." If I had read those slightly too large dimensions, though, I wouldn't have bothered to give the carafe a try. Like others I hated to throw away a perfectly good press frame. Given the Product Features statement that "Universal size fits all 3 cup French press designs" I thought I'd take a chance. Some reviewers had success, anyway, and I'd otherwise return it -- as inefficient and added hassle as that is.The unit I received has a 2 inch outside diameter across the very top, but that includes the rolled lip that extends out from the cylinder wall approximately 1/16 inch all around, or 1/8 inch more than the 2 5/8 inch outside diameter of the cylinder below the lip. The latter main cylinder diameter is the important dimension, as that's what must fit into your press frame. If the carafe had been 2 inches below the lip it wouldn't have fit my frame. Even at 2 5/8 inch I had to totally remove the screw and nut that tensions the top frame band and secures it to the handle in order to get the carafe into the frame. The four thin metal strips that form the four "legs" of the frame expanded just enough to allow the carafe to seat to the bottom of the frame. I then had to get a longer screw to secure the top metal band to the handle. Also important is the inside diameter of carafe. The Bonjour carafe I received is 2 inches. Again a little wide, but I was able to bend-out the screen on the press plunger enough to get a decent seal and avoid having coffee grounds seep around the edge, as another reviewer experienced. If the carafe had been the stated 1/8 inch wider, any screen adjustment would have been insufficient to close the gap.Last, my replacement carafe unit is 5 inches tall, not 5 1/4 per the Product Description. Good thing. My plunger would otherwise have been on the short side, as another reviewer cited. With the frame feet added my French press stands 5 1/4 inches to the top lip, but the important dimension is the carafe itself. If manufacturers and/or Amazon could make such critical product information accurate and easily accessible it would help consumers and encourage re-use of materials (rather than land filling), plus lower costs for everyone by reducing handling and shipping of preventable returns. (I work in the public sector and we get criticized for inefficiencies?!??). What is the comparative cost of providing easily accessible, more complete, and accurate consumer information? At minimum, Amazon should delete manufacturer claims such as in the first line under Product Features: "Universal size fits all 3 cup French press designs." Clearly it does not, and such statements only mislead. With incomplete and/or inaccurate information consumers get wary or even cynical, as reflected in other reviews. Perfect Replacement! Ignore the bad reviews.

My visiting mom recently dropped my french press and the spout broke. I really loved the metal case so I looked for a replacement carafe. I was thrilled to see that Amazon carried them. I panicked a bit when I saw the mixed reviews, but then I read them and realized the poor reviews were actually poor reviewers. The carafe is a good product - it is strong and fit my press perfectly. The bad reviews are from people who are mad that they didn't understand the french press cup system, and rather than admit they ordered the wrong item they leave a bad review for a perfectly good item.
