I like Bodum and have used their products for year. This 8 cup (3-4 real mugs) is no exception. Nice bright color, clean pour and easy to clean.They have improved the handle so you can carry it more easily and although the holder looks flimsy it is actually very sturdy in use.The bright colors mean you can have it on the table with friends, without it feeling a little cheap.

I was excited to try this product after reading all the good reviews. However, there are 2 major design flaws that I can't believe were overlooked.1) The lid is quite loose fitting, meaning steam easily escapes during brewing and the water does not stay as hot as it should during the entire process. This also means a little extra care must be used to ensure a straight vertical press.2) The mesh cannot be plunged to the bottom of the carafe. While I understand why they might choose to do this (so that people who are inexperienced don't shatter the carafe or ruin the mesh by plunging too deeply), it is not an efficient design. The design should not be the limiting factor of how far one can plunge the mesh, the user should be in full control. The end result is that if you plan to make coffee for 1 person, or basically anything less than 2 people, you won't make a very good cup of coffee because the mesh will not even come close to fully pressing on the grind. Yes, I realize Bodum makes a 12 oz. version of this French press, but does this mean I must purchase and use a separate press every time I only want to make coffee for one person? That's ridiculous and greedy of Bodum.I'll definitely be looking for a French press with a better design.

I had a French press years ago and hated it. Maybe it was the press, maybe I didn't know how to use it. This is a completely different story. It works great. But as others have pointed out, you MUST follow the directions. Here's what I recommend:1. Use the coarsest grind possible. I have an antique Kitchen Aid A-9 grinder from the '50s. Set on the coarsest setting it's perfect.2. Use extremely hot but not boiling water. I dispense from an Insta-Hot mounted on the sink.3. Stir with a non-metallic stirrer. I use a wooden spoon.4. Let it steep 4 minutes (or a bit longer).5. Depress the plunger and pour a great cup of coffee.There are a couple of small downsides:1. You won't get 8 AMERICAN cups of coffee out of this. I use 1/2 a pot of water and 1/3 cup of coarse coffee to yield ONE big mug of strong coffee (well, maybe a mug and a half)2. While it's steeping for 4 or 5 minutes it's also cooling. I fill my mug with near-boiling water to preheat it and that works pretty well. Hate to resort to microwaving a fresh cup of French press!3. You may want to leave the last drop of coffee in your cup because there will be a few stray grounds.4. Cleanup is only SLIGHTLY less convenient than a paper filter. One of those screen strainers in the kitchen sink will catch any grounds you didn't knock out into the garbage.Bought this on sale and I'm glad I did. My wife still prefers the drip coffee but when our schedules are not in synch, this is what I use.Dig the red color, but it also comes in black ;)
