For best results, use coarse ground coffee. Just add the appropriate amount of ground coffee to the beaker (we recommend one 7 gram scoop per 4 oz. of water). Fill the beaker with hot water (just off of a boil). Leave about an inch from the top of the beaker. Give the coffee a stir with a plastic or wooden utensil to mix it completely with the water. Set the plunger and lid unit in place with the safety lid in the closed position. Allow the coffee to brew for 4-minutes and then press. Starbucks had a cyber-Monday promotion where if you bought 3 lbs of coffee, they would give you this Bodum Kenya set which is an 8-cup French Press Coffee Maker and a Travel French Press. I was able to take advantage of that promotion.Let's get something cleared up right away... this is not an "8-cup" French Press unless you are accustomed to drinking 4 ounce cups of coffee. I don't know about you but I can safely say that I drink at least 12-ounce cups of coffee and maybe even more, A Starbucks "Tall" is 12 ounces. So by that measure, this is a 3-cup French Press.This is a very nice quality French Press. The borosilicate glass is of good quality. The frame is chromed stainless steel with a plastic handle and base. It's quite substantial. The internal press assembly is largely stainless steel with a plastic top. The screen is replaceable and you will have to replace the screen occasionally since it will probably develop a crease in the edge over time that may result in coffee sneaking through when you press it down to make your coffee. You'll know when it's time to replace it... you'll have little coffee grounds in your teeth as you drink your coffee.The Travel French Press is not as robust as the larger French Press. It is a plastic thermal mug and it will keep your freshly brewed cup of coffee nice and hot for a while. It has a nice, spill-resistant lid. But the plunger in this is mostly plastic so greater care must be used. A problem I've had several times is that once you've finished your coffee and begin to unscrew the top, it also unscrews the rod from the screen assembly and on occasion that leaves the screen stuck at the bottom of the mug, It then has to be coaxed out. Furthermore, the edge of the screen is actually a silicone seal rather than a stainless steel screen so you must be careful that you don't tear the edge or it will let coffee sneak out when you plunge it down.I thoroughly enjoy the absolutely fresh cup of coffee that a French Press makes and the Bodum French Press is of good quality. It's about the freshest cup of coffee you'll ever have since it's made moments before you begin to drink it. And you get to make it as strong as you'd like simply by adjusting the amount of coffee you put in the beaker.So this is a great French Press and a not so great travel mug. 5 stars for the French Press, 3 stars for the travel mug which leaves an overall 4 star rating.
