Planetary Design Travel Presses. Planetary Design has revolutionized the century old art of brewing coffee and tea via French Press. The Boot Cut travel press mugs, constructed of 18/8 stainless steel, are incredibly durable and equally impressive in their ability to retain heat for extended periods of time. The patented double filtration system, modeled after a hydraulic cylinder, ensures that grounds will not pass through, creating the perfect brew of coffee or tea. Simply pour hot water over coffee grounds or loose leaf tea, let steep, push stopper down and enjoy the best brew around. No need to pour into a separate container, you can drink right from the pot. Additionally, the Boot Cut press was designed specifically with an extra wide base for additional stability in a great line of colors. The mug presses are ideal for the coffee or tea connoisseur that doubles as an outdoor enthusiast or professional on the run.

This is one great product. I am now a convert. I had some so-so experiences with french presses in the early 80's that were the well known glass models. Heat retention was non-existent with the glass models so I wandered away. I knew about the Nissan thermal model but was never attracted to them, they seemed more for camping than everyday office use. Then I stumbled upon this model here at Amazon. They work very well. Heat retention during steeping is good and a major plus for this design. Heat retention is important not only for drinking afterward but for steeping. If the temperature is dropping during the four or so minutes of steeping that can't help but have a negative effect on the coffee extraction, which depends on the correct temperature. This model solves that problem and looks good to boot! This model is twenty ounces, although the final amount you pour in your mug is about sixteen ounces. I go both ways, sometimes draining the entire pot into a large mug and sometimes using a smaller mug. When leaving the coffee in the pot it does stay reasonably hot but does lose some temperature (why I knocked the rating down to four stars). It does not retain heat like a normal thermos with a screw down stopper (even with preheating with hot water). Part of the reason for this may be that the spout doesn't have a cover and some heat escapes through there. All in all, given the size, the heat loss is acceptable. For a larger model, I don't know if that would be a problem for keeping coffee hot for a longer period of time.Workmanship is great. The pot itself is sturdy. The top creates a good seal. The plunger uses a nylon screen and creates a good seal when plunging without being too difficult. The amount of grounds/sediment seems about right for this method of extraction. Clean up is easy, just dump out the grounds and rinse. The wide mouth and steel construction make it easy to rap it against a counter or side of the trash to dump out the grounds (something that would be difficult I imagine with the glass versions).I like this device a lot and have already given one as a present and recommended them to my local coffee shop owner as a retail opportunity.Update: January 2012. This pot has held up very well. While I'm not a power user, I've been using it regularly once a week for over three years. Still no complaints and I would still recommend to anyone.

This french press travel mug works great. Grinds do not get through because of the double mesh system. The lid fits decently. Others have commented that the lid "pops" off easily. I did not find this to be the case. It takes a little pressure to remove the lid, and it should not fall off randomly. The only drawback is that it's wide base does not fit in a car cupholder. This is ok, though, if you are looking for a travel mug that doesn't tip off your desk. I do manage to walk/drive with the mug. First, I don't fill coffee to the top (this thing holds alot of coffee, so you won't miss it if the mug is not full), and then I put the mug in the passenger seat and use the seatbelt. I put my handbag next to it so that it doesn't tip over when turning. Sounds funny, but it works. The "press" top has a small opening to drink from, but no cover, so just be careful. The "travel" top has a cover that works well. Another reviewer said something along the lines of "drinking like an adult, and not using the lid". I don't understand that comment at all because this is a "TRAVEL MUG", so that's why someone would use the lid in first place. Otherwise, just buy a french press and pour the coffee in your own mug. The mug is huge, and does look like a small carafe, but who cares as long as it holds the coffee you love? This press makes a good serving (2 or 3 servings in fact), keeps it warm for about 2 and a half hours, is easy to clean, and doesn't tip over.

The brew-and-drink-from-the-same-cup French Press Mug-Boot Cut, is easy to use, makes great coffee, and is the first french press coffee maker I have used that hasn't treated me to a few coffee grounds or tea leaves mixed in with my beverage. The "presser" contains a screen material, and the drink-through lid has an additional screen that blocks any stray grounds or leaves. The mug itself is high quality, and its wide base (the boot cut) keeps the mug from tipping over easily. The trade-off for the stable base is that it doesn't fit auto cup holders. The brewing top doesn't seal off completely with a traditional slide feature, but it has a spill resistant design. The mug ships with a second travel top that does close--a dubious bonus for coffee brewed in the mug, since removing the brew-top takes away the two screen features that keep the grounds away--but could be useful for soups or other liquids that need to stay hot. This french press brews about two standard size mugs of coffee. The directions are written for smaller cups, so adjust accordingly.
